Yesterday began badly. I was wearing a wire to check my nightime oxygen levels and it bothered me so much I never slept more than an hour at a time – until 4:30am, when I slept through till 7:05. I was scheduled to do the 6:30am Mass. I was really upset by that. I looked at my alarm clock and after the power outage, I set the time 12 hours off. Instead of 5:40 am I had put 5:40pm. It really upset me BUT God is good because Fr. Percy, who gets up early, went down to get coffee at 6:10am and noticed the chair had not moved, so he came and did the Mass.
Then Joan took me to therapy. It hurt but I do believe the swelling is going down and generally I am in less pain because I do take those pills. I napped afterwards and at 1:30, I got a ride over to hear confessions in Silver Spring. Patrick picked me up around 5pm and we went to supper. I had pork chops and I really enjoyed them. I came home and worked in my suite and went to bed early – I checked the alarm settings.
I got up at 5:40 and packed. When I walked outside, I was stunned by the heat. It was already 80 degrees. I had the 6:30am Mass. Something was wrong with the system. If you turned on the microphones when the air-conditioning was on, then there was a terrible hummmm. The server asked what I wanted to do so that people could hear the readings. I told him to forget the microphones, the air was more important!! In addition, I hadn’t taken a pill, so my leg hurt. I didn’t preach and I think the Mass was over by 6:48.
I came down to the office and took the pill and feel a little better, I have the 8:30 and after that Maggie’s Mike is coming to drive me South. I think I’ll stop over at Maggie’s and then someone will take me to St. Michael’s. I have a wedding rehearsal at 6pm. It is for Kristin Padukiewicz, Muffin and John’s daughter and Beth McCoy’s grand-daughter. The wedding is at 7pm on Saturday. I will stay at the rectory for the weekend. It is all on one floor and Fr. Lee has gone to Seattle to marry a nephew, so I will be the “Father Sub” for the weekend. I have 5:30pm Mass on Saturday and the 8 and 10:30am Masses on Sunday. There are lots of events and some one from the McCoy family will “transport” me around. It will be great to see all of them and catch up on their activities. Also I will try to see lots of my former parishioners. Someone from Maggie’s gang will bring me home Sunday afternoon. I hope my energy level holds out.
Since I have a busy Monday morning with Mass and therapy; I may not write again till Monday. Know that, as always, you and your needs are in my prayers.
Loved the fact that your chair at the top of the stairs is a signal to all below!!
I am spending the weekend entertaining a missionary priest and trying to find an assisted living place for Isabelle. Can’t wait for this heat to break….
I knew what I was doing when I moved north. I spent today wearing a lined long sleeve shirt as the weather averaged around 55 degrees. We’ve had a lot of fog, so we find the whales by listening for them. The dogs are still excited about going down to the whale boats and the weather has been fantastic for that. I don’t miss that horrible Maryland heat a all. I talked with Terry about 4 days after the storm and he was hot and exhausted as there was no power at the house. Our local icebergs have melted and we did have one day where it got close to 90, but since I am on the ocean, the breeze keeps the house quite comfortable for the three of us and the two mason who spent all day everyday here building the dry stack facing of my heater. It is turning into a beautiful work of art and I hope it will be done in about two weeks. When that happens I will be shampooing rugs and going into professional cleaning mode to try and get rid of the masonry and drywall dust. Nothing is ever simple. Remember that it takes time to heal, and horrible heat and humidity always slows things down. I would offer for you to come up, but it doesn’t sound like you could manage the plane trip. My house is all on one floor and is handicapped accessible as I know that I will be needing some orthopedic device when I least expect it. that’s life from here! Oh, I may be reporting the Archdiocese to the Provincial labor board for not releasing my last pay check. After talking to the Archbishop and sending a registered letter requesting it be released, I have heard absolutely nothing and tomorrow will be the 1 year anniversary of the accident. There is really no excuse at this point. I’m also toying with the idea of making up a sign and staging a one person protest in front of the Chancery to embarrass them into getting my pay. Haven’t made my mind up about that. It’s the principle of the thing at this point. Try and stay cool and try to remember that you are retired. Act like it! Peace out…
Just got back on line today. We were out of electricity since late Friday night and it didn’t come back on till this Friday. Our phone and internet got back on today. Mays Landing looks like a war zone trees down everywhere. We were very lucky our house is still in one piece and the trees that went down were in the woods. With no electricity we had no water either since we have a well and without electricity no water. We are just thankful we have a pool so it became out tub and toilet flusher. After 71/2 days without these luxuries it was getting a little stressful. I certainly admire our ancestors for all they went through.
Happy to hear your doing better. Say hello to Muffin and her family for me when you see her. It seems impossible there daughter is old enough to get married when we went to St. Michael’s she was just a teenager. Time sure does fly.
