FOURTH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME – 1-28-18

January 28th, 2018

Am so sorry that I have been “off line” for awhile and it led some to think I was ill. I forgot my password and just couldn’t get in to write anything. Now I have it on a “post’m” on my wall in the rectory and the office at the parish center.

I have just returned from the 7:30am Mass and had a lovely breakfast made for me by Brian and now that Mike worked on Paddy and got it so that I can get into it; I’m just going to mail this out and assure everyone (I’m so glad to know that there are some people out there reading these rambling message!) that I am well and will try to update you over the next few days. But do keep me and so many others in your prayers.

12-13-17 MY DAY IN SECLUSION

December 14th, 2017

Today is my DAY OFF and I was suppose to go to lunch with a former Good Counsel student and in the evening to the wake of Monsignor Bill Kane at Little Flower. The weather has taken a nose dive and I noticed yesterday that my nose doesn’t like it when I go from cold to warm or warm to cold; so I decided just to spend the day in my office here in the rectory. Yesterday, they took out my air conditioner and discovered that the heat was not coming up in the radiators; so I will spend the day here and try to get a message out.

Let’s see. My last report was on November 27th. I was planning to go to the funeral of Jeanette Williams (Mary Mudd’s sister) but I wasn’t up to the trip and spent the rest of the day in my suite. I am just so tired.

On the 28th, I did the 11am Mass and then returned to the rectory. I had an appointment around 3pm and we met in the parlor.

On the 29th, I Ubered to the John Vianney House for the retired priests gathering. It was good to see the guys but I did not stay for lunch because the GIRLS picked me up and we did some shopping. I got some more coins for St. Nick’s day.

On the 30th and December 1st, I said some Masses but returned to the rectory afterward.

On Saturday, the 2nd, I had the 5:30pm Mass. I preached about confession and a few people came to see me after Mass for confession. Also Sister Agnes came down from New Jersey and there was a large group of the SDC (Separated and Divorced Catholics) who came to Mass and then we went to supper at La Ferme. It was great to be with them and I enjoyed being with them. Colleen and Monte drove me over and back and I was ready for bed by 10pm.

On Sunday, the 3rd, I had the 7:30am Mass. I was glad to have to get up early because I had a marriage blessing and a baptism at 11:30 in the chapel. The Grandmother was Polish and I used my one phrase I know, Domne Buzie”. It means “Give me a kiss” She was thrilled. My mom taught me that because her grandfather, who was from Poland, use to say it to her and my aunt. I’m so glad she passed it on to me.

On the 4th, 5th, and 6th, I was busy getting all my coins bagged and labeled. I said daily Mass and on Tuesday went to the apartment where we had Tuesdays with Fr. Maury and 4 pre-school children came to visit. They put their shoes “outside” and got some toys and candy. I was dressed like St. Nick and Rita told his story. They stayed and decorated cookies but I came home to bed. Fr. Ryan, who was our deacon and is now the assistant at Holy Redeemer came by and I gave him coins for the young children there. I asked if he could grow a white beard in a day but he didn’t think he could. I’ll have to find out what he did.

On Wednesday, I rode over in my cart to the gym and joined in a lovely St. Nicholas prayer service. Fathers Bill and Alec joined me and we gave out the coins. Sister Mary Ann arranged the service and all enjoyed it. I had planned to go to lunch with three ladies from Leisure World but we cancelled it. I did meet with a nice lady in the parlor and then took the day off.

On Thursday, I had the 11am Mass and Ubered to St. Luke’s to hear confessions. Ginny, Joan’s daughter was kind enough to come at get me and I went to their house for supper and a nice visit. Joan is doing well with her rehab and the girls take very good care of her. They wanted to drive me home; but I Ubered.

We have had a lot of funerals and if I’m scheduled for the 11am, someone else does it and i just stay in my suite. I did that Friday and on Saturday, we had First Penance and I heard confessions, said Mass, and heard more confessions. My cousins, Rick and Peg came and we went to three cemeteries and prayed and put out wreaths. With ended up – as is our custom – with supper at Crisfield’s. They also shared pictures of their grandson, William James. Keep him, them, and the parents – Kate and James – in your prayers.   I was tired but knew that the first thing I had to do on Sunday was the 5:30pm Mass, so I slept well.

Stayed in my pj’s all day.  Saw Maggie, Sue, and Mike, who brought up Christmas ornaments. then I did the 5:30pm Mass and went to bed.

On Monday, I covered Joan’s desk for while and then did the 11am Mass. I returned to the rectory.

On Tuesday, the 12th, I helped with morning confessions for the school and did the 11am Mass. I wore my Our Lady of Guadeloupe vestment and talked about her and the feast.  I worked in my office and saw two ladies and came home around 4:30. Our cook is still away but there is always food in the refrigerator.

And so we come to today. It is very cold and I will stay in my suite. Also I am suppose to go out tomorrow but we’ll see how the weather is. Cold and then warm really bothers my nose. Also the elevator in the parish center is broken and that will limit my getting around. Also there is a funeral on Friday so I won’t have Mass that day. We’ll see what the weekend brings.

Almost every night, I talk by phone to Marilyn, Joan, Fr. T, the Girls, and Carolyn ( we see who got the final Jeopardy answer) Please keep all of them in your prayers. Also Fr. Beattie is back in the hospital, keep him in your prayers. Joe Stoutz and Mary Black will be married tomorrow. Keep them and their families in your prayers.

Our IT person (I think) has made it possible to write Paddy from my suite; so if I don’t get out, I’ll still try to write. Hope you are having a Good Advent. I think I am.

MONDAY OF THE LAST WEEK OF THE YEAR IN ORDINARY TIME 11.27.17

November 27th, 2017

I am in the parish office today.  I came in last Saturday and started a message but after that, I had the 8am Mass and at 10:30am had a Baptism in the chapel and then went home to the rectory. I stayed there most of Saturday evening and also all day Sunday. I had the 5:30pm Mass and then was in bed by 8pm. Also today, I went out with Rose and Patty. We went to Baltimore, so that I might look again for a scooter. I got a lot more information and will work in earnest on getting on before Advent. I will have the 5:30pm Mass later and go home for soup and early to bed.

Tomorrow, I will take an Uber to St. Jane de Chantal parish for the 11am funeral of Jeannette Williams. She is Mary Mudd’s sister and died last week. Please keep her, her husband, Don and Mary and her family in your prayers.

My last message was written and published on Monday, November 13th. I had the 11am Mass. Had soup and went to bed early.

On Tuesday, the 14th, I had the 11am Mass and then we held our Tuesdays with Fr. Maury. Our topic was what to do for Advent. Good discussions and a really delicious tomato basil soup. I also met with someone for spiritual direction.  Also, I discovered this morning that I have a “flare up” of shingles.  I had the shot about 4 years ago and last night, I developed red blotches on my stomach. They itch but I just ignore them. I have a doctor’s appointment on Thursday.

On Wednesday, the 15th, Ellen picked me up and we drove to Madonna House and went to lunch with the three ladies who live there. It was so great to be with them – even though I kept ignoring the itch.

I JUST FOUND THIS MESSAGE, WHICH I BEGAN TO WRITE THREE WEEKS AGO. IT IS A STORY WORTH REPEATING!

On Thursday, the 16th I also remembered my parent and grandparents on this day, 79 years ago when they got married. I remember Mom saying that she and Dad and the two sets of parents went to Union Station from the reception in a dump truck. My parents were taking the train to NYC, staying overnight, and then taking a train to Niagara Falls. They spent the night in a hotel called the Lincoln. After a number of renovations, it opened again as the Milford Plaza, which is the hotel we use to stay in when we took the NYC trips from St. Bernard’s. While there, my parents received a telegram saying, ” Hope the trip up was relaxing. Have a good time in NYC and Niagara. Reception is still going strong!”.

I saw the doctor and she gave me some strong steroids and I hope that will take care of the flare up.

On Friday, the 17th, I said the 11am Mass, then met with a dear friend who is studying to become a deacon for Baltimore and then I went to my room Locked the door, took off all my clothes and just stayed inside waiting for the medicine to work. It hurt just to have the sheet touch me.

I was suppose to do a baptism on Saturday but as shingles is like chickenpox, I asked Fr. Alec to do the baptism. He did a great job.

On Sunday, I felt 1000% better and did the 12:30 Mass – with clothes!

Stayed home on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. I am still on the medicine but feeling OK.

Thursday, the 23rd, was Thanksgiving. I concelebrated the 10am Mass and re tired to my suite. A very nice lady brought me turkey, potatoes, gravy and dressing and at 4pm, I nuked it and had a lovely meal. Spent the whole day, saying aloud the names of my blessing as I called to my voice names of family, friends, and parishioners. It was a long and memorable list!

On Friday, I had the 11am Mass and then met someone for spiritual direction. Then my cousins, Rick and Peg took me to Ledo’s for lunch, where we met the Petrones.

On Saturday, the 25th, I had the privilege of baptizing Natalie Michelle. Good friends and a very happy event. Please keep all of them in your prayers.

On Sunday, I had the 5:30pm Mass. It was Christ the King and my homily was good! Today is Sister Ann Christine’s 90th birthday. I sent her flowers from all her students and friends out East.

Fr. Trancone is in the hospital and they are giving him transfusions as he is anemic.  Keep him in your prayers. I am going to close this and publish it and I’ll try not to get so far behind in the future.

FEAST OF ST. ELIZABETH OF HUNGARY – 11.17.17

November 21st, 2017

This is really part II of yesterday’s message.

We pick up on November 3rd. It is the feast of St. Martin de Porres and has been special to me since the seminary. I share that affection for him with Frances Sampogna and for years have called and prayed for her on “our “feast”. With the funeral and the trip to West Virginia, it slipped by me. On the 4th, I called her in the afternoon and apologized. She understood but did wonder what happened. Then I had 4pm confessions.  I phoned Marilyn to see how she was doing and went to bed early.

On Sunday, the 5th, I had the 12:30pm and the deacon preached. I relaxed and packed for my trip. Jerry called and said he wasn’t up to going. I understand as he is still in a lot of pain and will continue with the therapy this coming week.

On Monday, the 6th, I had the 11am Mass and then “the girls” picked me up at noon. We drove across the bridge and went to visit Marie Smith, a dear St. Bernard’s friend. We went out to lunch at a lovely little seafood place and talked and laughed. After we took Marie home, we stopped in Easton, Maryland to pick up a scooter that I had rented. Great young man who dis-assembled it and put it in the van. Then we drove to Cambridge, Maryland – about twenty more miles. Again, a nice young man assembled the scooter and I drove in to register and get settled. We were at the Hyatt Chesapeake Hotel. I was attending the Priests’ Convocation. There were about 270 priest of the Archdiocese. This was the 8th of these. They are every two years. I have tried to always attend as it is great to see old friends and – through the goodness of young priests whom I have lived with, I also know a lot of the younger guys. The ladies got me unpacked and then we had a nice dinner. They headed home – and texted me later when they arrived. I went to my room and took a nap, made some phone calls and then watched TV.

Slept well and around 5pm, most of the other guys had arrived and so we had evening prayer together and then a nice supper. I sat with Ray Fecteau, Kevin O’Reilly, Frank Early and Jim Boccabella -old friends and some guys I knew by name but not by face. It was a good meal and enjoyable company. The Cardinal held a brief Q&A and I stayed for it. He was excellent and it was interesting to hear priests comments. I made some phone calls and watched TV. Slept well.

I am getting better on the scooter and we had a Mass for all the priests who died this last year. I knew quite a few and I always like this Mass. The Cardinal preached and was excellent. After Mass, we went and listened to Bishop Robert Barron, the auxiliary of Los Angeles. He spoke on Pope Frances’ view of the priesthood. I really enjoyed it. He is very well know but I had not read any of his books or seen any of his DVDs. I will have to do that. Lunch was “on your own” and I joined Jim Boccabella and Saverio Vitturino to eat and visit. There were workshops but I took a nap. Supper, was again very nice and I just relaxed with friends. Sometimes durint the convocation, I’d see guys and we’d sit and “catch up”. those were great times. I talked with Jim Holloway and Mike Kelly, whom I really like and wanted to see and visit. Brief talks with Peter Sweeney, Mark Smith, and others just filled up the time with laughter. More phone calls and to bed early.

Bishop Barron preached at the closing Mass and gave us a good example of preaching. I sat in the lobby and said good byes to a lot of guys. The ladies came at 12:30. Again, a nice kid got the scooter in the van and we returned it to Easton and then headed across the bridge. I wanted to get over before “rush hour”; so we stopped at Double T diner and had a good meal. Then they dropped me at home and I took a nap. – I know I take a lot but I love them.

On Friday, Nov 10th, I had the 8am Mass and since the office was closed for Veterans’ Day, I stayed in my suite most of the day. Dan Poje, from Memphis, flew up this morning and was at a hotel nearby. I Ubered to him and then we went to the John S. Mulholland Gala at the Capital Hilton at 6pm. It was beautiful and there lots of people I know who attended. Dan and I sat at a table with two of the priests from here and Fr. Bill’s sister. Laura Fetters and her husband, Matt, Margaret Lawless, Pat Kavanaugh and her husband filled out our crowd. Music and food were great. Nice presentations and I think it raised a lot for the ministry. We support and supply five pantries in some of the poorest parishes in the city. Dan and I had some difficulties getting home and weren’t home till after 11.

On Saturday, I slept in and Ginny (Joan’s daughter) picked me and Dan up and drove us to Shady Grove Rehab to visit Joan. She is doing very well and although 84, she does about 7 hours of therapy daily. She is determined to get home and walk again. Her leg break was serious but they all are hopeful. Her daughters have been great about visiting and doing things for her. Keep all of them in your prayers. I had the 5:30pm Mass and the deacon preached. Dan attended and sat with Carolyn, my friend. She drove us to supper and then Dan back to the hotel and me to the rectory. He had an 8am flight. I was so grateful that Stephanie and he decided he should come. Stephanie had to work but she told him to go!!

On Sunday, I had the 10:30 in the gym. I rode my scooter over and they all helped me to get around and help with Communion. I was so glad to be there and able to do things. I had taken my name off the list since September because I thought it was too much work for all the helpers – but I am back on the list now. I lounged in my suite, watched TV, phoned a lot of people and took naps. A Good day!!

Monday, Nov 13th was the 23rd anniversary of Msgr. Dade’s death. It doesn’t seem that long because I love to quote him and still use so much of his wisdom and advice.

I  don’t know why I didn’t finish this and today is November 21st, so I’m going to publish and try to get it up to date in the next few days and try to publish it by Thanksgiving.

NOVEMBER 16, 2017 – 79TH ANNIVERSARY OF MY PARENTS’ WEDDING

November 16th, 2017

Today is also the feasts of St. Margaret of Scotland and St. Gertrude. I had the 8am Mass and will have the 5:30pm Mass also. I preached on both these wonderful and spirit-filled ladies.

I also remembered my parent and grandparents on this day, 79 years ago when they got married.

I don’t know where the time goes. I last wrote on October 28th. I had the evening Mass and so was able to spend all day Sunday relaxing in my suite. The weather keeps changing and so I am really tired. I did say the 11am Mass on Monday but was too tired to go over to the apartment and see the kids for the Halloween party. On Tuesday, I had the 8am Mass and I went for Tuesdays with Fr. Maury to the apartment. I rode over on my scooter and on the way back I stayed out on the parking lot to watch the children process around in their costumes.

On November 1st, I did the 8am Mass and then an Uber to Wheaton to get my haircut and my beard trimmed. Then I Ubered to the St. John Vianney House for the first Wednesday meeting of the retired priests. Had a good time and then I Ubered home. And took a nap.

On November 2nd, I had the 11am Mass and then concelebrated a special Mass we have at 7pm, where we remember by name all those who have been buried from the church over the last year. The choir does a beautiful Latin Mass and we have a small orchestra as well. It is one of my favorite things we do here.

On Friday, the 3rd, I had the 8am Mass, then I Ubered to Stone Ridge for a Mass and a talk on liturgical language for the Children of Mary. Then my friend, Pat drove me to the parking lot of St. Jane de Chantel; Carlo Mancuso, who drove up from Reston, VA picked me up and we went to Kathleen and Doug Hanratty’s and then rode to West Virginia. Frank Cavallaro’s funeral was at 3pm. The pastor and the staff were very nice and helped me get around the altar. I preached and it was easy because he was a really nice man, policeman, soldier, husband, father, and coach. We went to the cemetery, which was 25miles away. We had a police escort and people pulled over and even took off their hats. It was just like down in St. Mary’s county. I was very tired and while many went back to the parish for a great meal; we headed home. Fortunately, the first thing I had on Saturday was confessions at 4pm, so I just slept in and relaxed.

I think I’ll publish this and work on some more tomorrow.

STS. SIMON AND JUDE – 10.28.15

October 28th, 2017

Today I will be hearing confessions for the Confirmandi who are having a retreat day.

I just returned from confessions and had a great time. James was at the 11am Mass and he walked me back to the confessional near the lobby. I had water and my oxygen, so I did fine. Maybe about 12 confessions. Grace met me and helped me back to the sacristy. I had used my motorchair to come up and used it to get back to my office. I will stay here till I go up for the 5:30pm Mass and then go home; eat something, and go to my suite. I don’t have Mass tomorrow and it is supposed to rain all day, so I’ll just stay around my suite, nap, and watch TV

I last wrote on October 14th. On the 15th, I had the 7:30am Mass and then was going to relax and take an Uber to meet T, Gail, and the Degenhardts for supper. But Gail called to say T wasn’t feeling good, so we postponed it. I just relaxed.

On Monday, the 16th, I had the 11am Mass and afterwards two people came for spiritual direction. I went back and spent the day in my suite as the weather is strange and I miss the “pure” air of my room. I called Marilyn to see how Frank’s 90th birthday went. His sons came up and they all had a special dinner and cake in the dining room of the home with Marilyn. I call her every evening to see that she is taking care of herself as well as visiting him each day.

On Tuesday, the 17th, I had the 11am Mass and then rode my chair to the apartment for Tuesdays with Fr. Maury. We did the rest of the first three centuries of the church history. It went well but next session, we’ll get back to sharing more.

On Wednesday, the 18th, the Petrones came by and picked me up after they get  T. We went to motor vehicals and he got an ID card as his driver’s license will run out on the 21st – his birthday. Then we went out to lunch to celebrate his birthday. We had a great time.

On the 19th, I had the 11am Mass and then took a Uber to the dentist. He worked on a tooth he took an X-ray last time. I must say, I enjoyed the novocaine and after I Ubered back, I took a nice long nap.

On the 20th, I talked with the family and decided not to attend Jean Pizza’s wake. I’ll be at the funeral on Saturday. I said the 11am Mass for her and the family.

On Saturday, the 21st, I had the 8am Mass and then took an Uber to St. Ambrose in Cheverly. I sat in the sanctuary but I did walk out at the end to bless her body with Holy Water as she left. The Petrones picked me up and we went to Cusco and got stuff for the Mass and covered dish dinner Saturday at 4:30pm. Carolyn came and helped me get stuff set up and it all went very well. We had about 14 people and we sat and talked till I went upstairs around 7:30pm.

On Sunday, the 22nd, I just hung around the suite till 5pm and then came over for the Mass at 5:30. Maggie called to tell me that Tim and Kerry’s house has mold and they and the baby are now in her house.   I was in bed early.

On Monday, the 23rd, I had the 11am Mass and took a Uber out to Our Lady of Grace rectory in Leisure world. Our group (Fathers Jim, John, Regis, and Michael) met there. So they could see Jim’s and Paul’s new digs. then we went to GrillMarx, a nice restaurant nearby. We had a great time with lots of laughs and talk. John dropped me off as he lives nearby. Good time.

On Tuesday, the 24th, I had the 11am Mass and at 2pm, the Petrones picked up me and Fr. Ray Fecteau and we all went to Southern Maryland. We ate at Outback and then he and I concelebrated Fr. John Mattingly’s vigil Mass. He was our classmate and I was so glad we could go. We got home around 10pm and I was ready for bed.

Wednesday, the 25th was my DAY OFF and I stayed in my suite and tried to straighten it up. That night I learned that Rose had collapsed and that  T had fallen down the steps at the house and that ambulances came and took both her and him to the hospital. She had to stay overnight; he came back to the house. Both are in a lot of pain.

Thursday, the 26th, I had the 8am Mass and then I took an Uber out to Our Lady of Grace church. The wonderful man I mentioned last when I was at Our Lady of Perpetual Help whom I anointed; died and his funeral was at 11am. I preached and Fr. Jim presided. We rode together to the cemetery and then he drove me home. I spent most of the afternoon trying to learn about a scooter for here and for a cruise. I also talked with Marilyn and learned that Frank now has “hospice care”. Keep them both as well as T and Rose in your prayers. Please keep Jack Lynch and his family in your prayers.

On Friday, the 27th, I had the 8am Mass and the 11am Mass. I spent most of the day in my suite trying to find out how T and his sister Rose were doing. Rose came home but needs care.  T was driven up to the doctor and is now back at O’Boyle with steroids and a new schedule for therapy. Keep praying for them. Mary Alice called to tell me that Frank had died afternoon. Marilyn was doing respiratory therapy, so I told her to call me later. She did and seems to be holding up. The funeral will be next Friday, Nov. 3rd in the afternoon and I assured her, I’d be there. Please keep Frank, Marilyn, and their family in your prayers.

Today, I heard confessions and have stayed here to write this. I talked to T and he is in pain but hopes to get therapy on Monday. I am getting ready for the 5:30pm Mass. I forgot to mention that Msgr. Vincent Gatto died this week. I was hoping to get to his wake on Sunday night but it is expected to rain all day, so I think I will spend Sunday in my suite. Please keep him and his parishioners at St. Raphael’s in your prayers.

FEAST OF ST. CALLISTUS 10.14.17

October 14th, 2017

I guess my life has been very busy and since I can’t write and send a message from my suite in the rectory; I just get behind.

Today, I had the 11am Mass and at 3pm, I will baptize and confirm a man from the parish in the chapel. He was never baptized but married a lovely Catholic lass, 61 years ago in the church. All their kids and grandkids are Catholic. His brother-in-law was a priest, who died a few months ago. He said to his wife, “You nor your brother ever put any pressure on me to join the church. I should have done it while Dick was alive but I’d like to do it now. Why don’t we go see Father O?”. It’s been a delight and I’m looking forward to our service. Since I’m going to stay in the office for a couple of hours; I’ll at least start a message.

I last wrote on September 23rd.

On Monday, the 25th because we were down to two priests, I had the 6:30am, the 11am, and the 5:30pm Masses. They were fine. After the 11, I rode over to the senior center for a welcome back lunch. We had about 25.  I met someone for spiritual direction and I went to bed early.

On Tuesday, the 26th, I had the 8am Mass

Wednesday is my DAY OFF but I went to Dr. Lucas. Everything was fine. I just bummed around most of the day.

Thursday, the 28th, I had the evening Mass so I stayed in the suite most of the day

On Friday, the 29, I had the 11am Mass and then Rose and Patty came and took me to pick up the title to my car. I’m selling it to my niece and I will see her this weekend and give it to her, so she can get Md. tags, etc.

On Saturday, the 30th, I had the 11am Mass and then a baptism at noon. Please keep Quinn Carol Elizabeth and her family in your prayers. At 4:30pm, I said Mass in the chapel for a reunion of the class of 1952 from the 8th grade at Blessed Sacrament. It was lovely and about 70 people came. They had a nice reception afterwards in the large room but I was ready for home. Maggie, Mike, and Sue drove me down to Maggie’s, where we sat up too late visiting.

Early on Sunday, they drove me over to OLPH in Edgewater and I did the 8:30am Mass. Afterwards, I gave the Sacrament of the Sick to Jack Lynch, and old and dear friend from GC days. He has moved into an assisted living situation near by his daughter and son-in-law. It was great to see them all. Then we went to Jesus, the Good Shepherd church for the 1pm baptism of Quinn Margaret Keith. She is Tim and Kerrie’s new baby. We all went out to an Italian restaurant for lots of laughs and for great food. Mike and Sue brought me home around dark

I was glad I had the 5:30pm Mass on Monday, the 2nd as I was tired and glad to be in my AC.

On Tuesday, the 3rd, I sent flowers to Sister Natalie for the feast of the Little Flower. I called later in the day and the nurse told me they came and they were beautiful. Sister was napping! I understood. I had the 8am Mass and then I had my first Tuesdays with (Fr.) Maury for this year. It was church history and I think it went well.

Wednesday, I Ubered to the retired priests’ luncheon. It was nice to see the guys and learn how people were doing. Please keep Msgr Vincent Gatto and Fr. Beattie, neither was well enough to join us.

On Thursday, I had the 6:30am and the 5:30pm. I spent the “in between time” in my suite.

On Friday, the 6th, I had the 8am Mass and then Ubered to Stone Ridge for a Mass and presentation to some of the alumnae. It was on language in the Bible and in liturgy. It was lively and they want me back in November. Patty and Rose picked me up and we did a little shopping and I was back for the 5:30pm Mass.

On Saturday, the 7th, I had the 11am Mass and retuned to my suite and relaxed. I think I took a nap. Around 4, I took the Uber to the Mellon Auditorium at 1301 Constitution Ave for Christopher Jensen’s and Halley Dodge’s wedding. It was done by a close friend and was very nice. The setting is magnificent. The weather has been tough on my ability to breath, so I just sat in the atrium as everyone went for cocktails.  In the meantime, it was like watching Disney change the scene. They had set up a complete dinning room and bar with about 60 tables and chairs and place settings. It was just lovely. My cousins and my friend, Sheila were very attentive and got my to my table. Food was spectacular and the dancing (which I did not do) was very popular. Everyone got me out and in to my Uber and I was home in a half hour and then to bed.

On Sunday, the 8th, I had the 10:30 Mass and then went to breakfast with two lovely ladies from the parish. They had me back in time for the clergy – led session for Baptism at 1:45. Again, I was glad to be home in the AC. I tried to pack.

On Monday, the 9th (Columbus Day celebrated), Kass came and picked me up and we headed to West Virginia. We and Marilyn Cavallaro went to see Frank, who is in a nursing home nearby. I had a great visit with Frank and he talked for almost an hour about being a little boy to his upcoming 90th birthday. That is October 15th. He and Marilyn will celebrate 61 years of marriage on the 13th. Keep both of them in your prayers. We met Mary Alice and Brian McGreevy and the kids for lunch. Then we headed off to Pittsburgh and arrived by dusk.

On Tuesday, the 10th, we had lunch with Keith and Sheila Morris and then I took a nap. I think Kass did a little shopping and caught up on emails. At 6pm, we headed to a restaurant nearby when we met Bob Norton, Rich Wesolowski, and Tom Kredel. Also Karen and Joyce, who are nurses and friends from a long time who have travelled with us. Sheila and Keith brought Betty DeLuca from St. Anselm’s. We had great food and lots of laughs. Bill Feeney didn’t come and when we finally got a hold of him, it seems I had asked him to come and which night, Tuesday or Wednesday would be better. He called me and told me either was good and then he never heard from me again. I can’t let Fr. Beattie know this because he loves to remind me that “you get like your ‘first pastor’!” and mine, Msgr Eckert had a two minute retention span!!! We broke up around 9pm and I was in bed and asleep quickly.

On Wednesday, the 11th after a nice breakfast, I went back to my room and read. I also called some friends from the area but only got through to Louise. We had a great talk. Then I took a nap and Kass went to the casino. Around 4:30 we went to Kerry and Ed’s house, which was about 10 minutes away – Although it took us almost an hour as we were at the wrong house. We all had pizza (and deserts) and all the Morris family came. It was fun to catch up on each person’s activities. And Bill Feeney drove all the way from his parish to join us. He is such a good person and excellent pastor. We met early because it was a school night and the kids needed to get to bed. We broke up while it was still light and this kid was ready for bed too.

On Thursday, the 12th, Kass drove down and I was in my suite by 1:30pm. I took a nap.

On Friday, the 13th, I had the 11am Mass. Then John came to talk about the baptism on Saturday. I went up to hear the Confirmandi’ confessions. Then I took an Uber to pick up Barbara at Leisure World and we continued on to Mama Lucia’s in Olney. Kind of a reunion for GC.  Barry Fitz met us, as did Liz Cahill, and Dennis and Tonya Essig. We had a great time and who should be walking by? but Richie Seal. He is still working at GC (as are Dennis and Tonya). It was such a great evening. Although rides were offered, Barb and I Ubered home. Good to get to bed.

And now here we are today.

The Baptism and Confirmation went very well and of course, I saw people I knew years ago. Fr. John Mudd’s parents were there. He is a retired priest of the diocese and was our first deacon at St. Bernard’s when I was in the seminary. He was also at Queen of Peace before me and is a close friend of Father Alec. Also a Dominican priest, who is a friend came and he was a great help to me. John’s grandsons were the servers and his children were sponsors and readers. It was a real family event. They went off to a party and I just wasn’t up to it. I had the 4pm confessions and after I finish this, I’ll get some food and go to bed. I have the 7:30am Mass tomorrow and in the afternoon, dinner with the Degenhardts, Gail Battle, and Father T. so I need to rest up.

Keep praying for Frank, Msgr Beattie, and JoAnn. And know that you and your intentions are in my prayers as well.

FEAST OF SAINT PADRE PIO SEPTEMBER 23

September 23rd, 2017

It’s almost two weeks since I wrote, so I decided that I might be at my desk in the parish center for most of the day;  I would begin today (Saturday) and maybe finish on Sunday.

On Tuesday, the 12th, I had the 8am Mass and afterwards,  I put all the papers that were stacked and scatters around my desk into 4 large bags or boxes and asked the facilities’ guys to take them to my office in my suite in the rectory. I find that I can work better in the air conditioning in my suite. I will stay there all day Wednesday as well and maybe I can get my taxes from 2016 done. I have an extension till October. I had a couple come to see me but I met them over there. I am going to officiate at the blessing of their marriage on September 22nd. She grew up in St. Bernard’s and her mom was one of my Communion calls.

On Thursday, the 14th (the feast of the Holy Cross), I had the 8am Mass and returned to my suite. I go down for meals with the guys but I’ve thrown away three bags of trash and put a lot to be filed.

On Friday, the 15th, I came over for the 5:30pm Mass and was in bed by 8pm.

On Saturday, the 16th, I had the 8am Mass. Then at 10am I had a baptism in the chapel. I had another at 11am. Please keep Owen Joseph and John Callan and their parents and Godparents in your prayers. Around noon, Barry Fitz picked me up and we drove to Baltimore. He has a co-workers whose grandmother has been having anxieties about dying and he told his friend that a priest friend of his could calm her fears. (I don’t know how he could promise that; but he did). We had a nice visit and stopped for pizza on the return. (Oh, I had a great visit with Sarah – and she just needed to know how loving and merciful God is. I told her about Pope Francis’ quote that I have on my bulletin board “The mercy of God will always be greater than any sin”. and we had a great time and prayed). I asked Barry to drop me off at St. Andrew’s church in Wheaton as there was going to be a Mass in honor of Venerable Fr. Aloysius Schwartz. He was a priest of Washington, grew up in Holy Name parish, was ordained in St. Martin’s church on North Capitol Street, and went to South Korea and began Boys and Girls town for the orphans and poor. He founded a community of sisters and there are now towns in the Philippines, Mexico, and another country. His family moved to St. Bernard’s and when he came home to visit, he said Mass there. I remember that Msgr. Dade said to me, “He is a saint and will be canonized some day!” He is “on the way”. I am so glad that I went to the Mass. Saw Delores Vita, who is his sister and other people from St. B’s. I sat next to a lady, who turned out to be the aunt of one of our priest, Drew Royal. She comes to Blessed Sacrament sometimes and she and her sister brought me home. I was ready for bed but had a great “priest” day.

On Sunday, the 17th, I slept in since I was only scheduled for the 5:30pm Mass that day. However, Rose and Patty picked up Jerry and then me and we went “shopping” and out to lunch. Great time and then they dropped me off and I had a good homily and Mass at 5:30. I know it was good because I got an email telling me that I was doing a dis-service to the people by telling them how merciful God is. We need more discipline! I didn’t response.

On Monday, the 18th, I had the 11am Mass and then did some more cleaning. I returned for the 5:30pm. My room is looking very good.

On Tuesday, I didn’t have Mass as the 11 was a funeral. I did ride my scooter over to the apartment and had “Tuesdays with Fr. Maury”. We shared on our summer and they had a delicious birthday cake (I ate two pieces!) and gave me a nice card and gift. This birthday has gone on a long time!!! I had an appointment and then returned to my suite. More cleaning.

On Wednesday, the 20th, I took an Uber to Joan Beall’s house and then Patty and Rose picked us up and drove us to Shrewsbury Pa where we visited Betty Neary. She showed them her home and then Mary Elizabeth (her daughter) joined us and we had lunch at the Mason Dixon dinner. Was so good but their bathrooms were out of order. Mary offered her home, which is two minutes away and we all to advantage. Then they headed back to Betty’s and we headed home. We must have just missed “rush hour” in Baltimore and DC because I was back by 5pm. I was ready for bed.

On Thursday, the 21st (Fr. John Bohrer’s birthday), I had the 8am Mass and preached on St. Matthew’s call by Caravaggio. It is a powerful painting and Pope Francis loves it. It went well. It was also the first anniversary of Nabil Boctor, a wonderful man who was a Coptic Catholic, married to a Roman Catholic and with whom he came to church every Sunday for 42 years. Last year, he asked to come into full Communion, so he could receive the Eucharist. He came in and within the year, he died. We had a great funeral and his wife and sister-in-law were at the Mass and afterwards, we visited. God is so good. I did get to talk with John Bohrer on his birthday.

On Friday, the 22nd, I had the 11am Mass and ate lunch at the rectory. Then  I took a nap. Actually I think I neglected to mention I take a nap every day when I can. It is so nice to be in the cool (64 degrees) air conditioning and wrap up tight in the blanket with my oxygen on!  After the nap, I took an Uber to Our Lady of Lourdes church. I was there around 4pm, so I went up and visited with Fr. Beattie. We hadn’t seen each in a couple of months, although we speak on the phone often. His leg is still not cured, so he has an attendant to be with him at night. He hates it but I think that was required if he wanted to come back to the rectory. He does use the chair to go up and down and he does use the walker for Mass and Confessions. He joined me in the sanctuary for the wedding of our friends, Daria and John.  The seminarian, Patrick Mullan came from CUA and led us around the altar. He was a great help and we could not have done it without him. The couple wanted us to join them and their friends but Fr. Beattie was ready to go up and Patrick kindly drove me to Blessed Sacrament. I was ready for bed.

Today, I had the 8am Mass and began this missive. I had a baptism at 1pm with a darling baby, Charlotte Susan, who is the great grandchild of Albert and Ruth Sindall, who were the parents of 8 children at St. Camillus and a family I dearly loved. Albert’s funeral was at Camillus in July. He was 99. So keep him and Ruth and Charlotte Susan, her parents and Godparents in your prayers. I decided to stay here and work on this missive. I have 4pm confessions and then I’ll go back to the rectory. I’m so glad I did decide, since Jane Delgado, a parishioner walked past my window with Msgr. Duffy. He had been to her house for dinner and thought they’d stop in. Msgr was pastor here for 25years and now resides at the Little Sisters’ Home in DC. I had told him about a book and it was here on my desk, so I was able to give it to him. It’s called “The Good Bishop” and is the story of Walter Sullivan, who grew up here in the parish and was the 10th bishop of Richmond, Virginia. A great book. So I will close this out and get ready for confessions at 4pm.

I have been on the phone a lot. I call some people every day to see how they are doing. Frank Cavallaro isn’t getting better and I worried about Marilyn. I call Jerry. HIs eyes are still not perfect. Dave Hallas, Sarah Jean’s husband was back in the hospital. JoAnn seems better – she’s back at the center. Peanut is on the waiting list for an organ transplant. So keep all of our sick friends and relatives in your prayers. Know that you are in mine.

TODAY IS 9/11 – A DAY OF REMEMBRANCE

September 11th, 2017

( I BEGAN THIS AWHILE AGO) I last wrote in late August and don’t know where the days go. Today is the birthday of Our Lady and is the  54th anniversary of my entrance into the seminary.  I seem to remember dates in terms of past events. I arrived at St. Nazianz’s on a Sunday night after a day of travel by plane, train, and school bus. I met some great guys that day, many of whom I am still in contact with.

(To pick up from Late August)

On Tuesday, the 29th of August, I had the 8am Mass and then went back to my suite. It wasn’t too hot but I wanted to “rest up” for Wednesday.

On Wednesday, the 30th, I was going to take an Uber but had trouble with the phone and Rosalie, who was coming into work, offered me a ride. I was very grateful as I was going to Holy Cross Academy for a 10am Mass. It was the beginning Mass for a year of celebrations for the 150th anniversary of the founding. 6 priests concelebrated and there were around 500 students and another 100 faculty or former faculty and alumnae. I’m glad I got there early enough to get up on the stage and get settled with my oxygen, etc. before the crowd arrived. The music was lovely and I had a chance to visit with some Holy Cross sisters who are old friends. Then I Ubered home.

Got here just in time to meet Joe Villani and we went to lunch at a nice Italian restaurant in Bethesda. Good meal and we caught up on his family. I officiated at his son, Jeff’s wedding a few years ago and now he and his wife are at the embassy in Warsaw. Joe and Pat have been doing a lot of travelling in retirement and went to see them in Poland.

I got home and took a nap because at 4:30, David picked up me and Carolyn and we went to have supper at Father Ron’s rectory in Bowie. He is almost settled in and we had a great meal and visit. He is missed here at Blessed Sacrament but seems to be very content at Sacred Heart. We met Fr. Scott, who was assistant there and is now the pastor of St. Edward’s. It was a lovely evening but I was glad to get in bed.

On Thursday, the 31st, I had the 11am Mass for the 54th wedding anniversary of Anna Marie and Gene Kinerney. I was at their 50th. Gene died a couple of years ago but Anna Marie has become part of our “cruising” crowd. She brought Delores, who went to grade school with her, and whom I have known since Fr. Beattie was at St. Mary’s. Her husband died 2 years ago and she lives in RiderWood. The there of us went to lunch and had a nice visit.  Had a nap and then the 5:30pm Mass. Nice supper and visit with the pastor.

A friend asks to stop by and talk on Friday morning. Her sister died and we had a good visit. I had the 5:30pm Mass.

On Saturday, September 2nd, a woman whose mother was one of my Communion calls at St. Bernard’s came with her husband to see me and “catch up”. I am going to bless their marriage later this month. They were off to visit her Mom in upstate New York. I had the 5:30pm Mass and afterwards, Carolyn and Father Foley and I went to Ledo’s. Great time.

On Sunday, I just relaxed and stopped by to see the Fathers in the sacristy between Masses. Around 5pm, Patty and Rose Petrone came with Fr. T and Philip to take me out to an Asian smorgasbord. It was fun and we celebrated Philip’s birthday.

September 4th was Labor Day. I had the 11am Mass and then Fr. Alec drove me to Little Flower for the annual Labor Day cookout for the priests of the Archdiocese. I always enjoy it and the chance to see the guys. I sat at a table with Fr. Andy, Fr. Paul Hill, Fr. Ray Kemp, Fr. Duffy, Fr. Kazista, Fr. English, and Fr. Fecteau, We had a lot of laughs. Fr. Foley was kind enough to bring me home.

I just rested up on Tuesday and had the 5:30pm Mass

On Wednesday, the 6th, Kathy Healy drove me out to Laurel to visit Mary Horan. She is a sweetheart and the next to the youngest of the Horan kids from St. Bernard’s. She is 59 and lives in a group home, where I have visited her for supper. Keep her in your prayers.

Kathy dropped me off at the St. John Vianney House in Kensington. We have a retired priests’ meeting and luncheon there on the first Wednesday of the month. We had about 15 guys there and I enjoyed seeing them and “catching up”. Took an Uber home, a nap, and supper. early to bed.

On Thursday, the 7th, I had the 11am Mass and then Patrick was coming by to go out to lunch. Around 4pm, Brian is picking me up to go to the wake of Fr. Daley’s mom in Baltimore. I am always grateful to have a ride to a wake or funeral of a priest or his family.

On Friday, the 8th, the birthday of Our Lady I started this. I had the 8am Mass. Then a nice lady whose is a Eucharistic Minister for Fr. Carmen in Trenton, came by to visit while spending the week with her son and is family.

Brian drove me to the rehearsal for a wedding at St. Dominic’s in Southeast DC. It is the church where my grandparents were married and one of our regular stops on our Holy Thursday pilgrimage.

On Saturday, the 9th, which is the feast of St. Peter Claver and the birthday of Fr. Dwight in Kansas, I had the 11am Mass. I called Dwight and then my niece, Mary Ann came by to borrow my car. Brian and Rowena drove me to the wedding. It was lovely and I would ask you to keep Robert and Amanda in your prayers. They are so in love! The reception was on the terrace of an old building on Constitution Ave and had a great view of the city. I came home early as I had the early Mass on Sunday and I was tired out.

Sunday, the 10th I had the 7:30am Mass and then concelebrated the 10:30 Mass, which was the installation of Father Foley as pastor, done by Cardinal Wuerl.  I had never been to an installation and it is very beautiful and meaningful. The Cardinal gave a very good talk and the church was full. There was a reception afterwards but I didn’t go because Barb was picking me up and driving me to Our Lady of Grace in Leisure World. My dear friend, Ursula Lemanski, whose 100 birthday I went to last year, was part of the parish celebration of all those 100 or older. I just had to be there. I saw Fr. Jim, his brother, Paul, Mrs. Poulos, and other friends. Another of the honorees was Austin Carlson, who daughter came up to me and reminded me that she was the third grade teacher at St. Camillus when I was a young priest. We sat and laughed and “caught up” on lots of things. Again it is nice to see old friends. When I got home, I went right to bed.

Today, is the 11th and I had a Mass at 8am and the one at 5:30pm. Of course, we prayed for all those who died 16 years ago and for those who mourn them. We had a number of deaths from Blessed Sacrament. Also today is the anniversary of Jim Neary’s death and of my sister, Maureen. Jim is 17 years and Mo is 3 years. May all our beloved dead, REST IN PEACE.

FEAST OF ST. AUGUSTINE – AUG. 28th

August 28th, 2017

Today – if I get this finished and sent out – will be the 54th anniversary of my Dad’s death, August 25, 1963. He died very suddenly in Pascagoula, Mississippi in the presence of my Mom and my sisters Maggie and Maureen. They were on vacation. It seems both so long ago and recently. Faith makes such events easier to handle.

I sent out a brief message on August 10th because I wanted to assure you that I was OK. I found the heat so oppressive that I stayed close to my suite (and the 62 degree air conditioning) and I can’t write on this blog from the rectory. I’m not sure why. But today, I am in the parish center and between doctor’s visits and Mass, I will try to bring you up to date.

On Saturday, August 12th, I had Mass at 11am and then Joan W. drove me to the wedding of Eric and Erika Riccuci in Baltimore. Eric’s mom is Mary Rosenberger Riccuci and lived two houses down from us on 62nd Avenue. I was glad to go and saw lots of friends from St. B’s. Joan, who is our office manager, was on vacation; but drove me as part of her “ministry to the handicapped”. She drives me to doctors and for haircuts. She’s kind of my personal Uber and I appreciate her goodness to me.

On Sunday, the 13th, I had the 10:30am Mass and afterwards, Maggie, Mike and Sue were outside in the car to take me to lunch. But I was exhausted and “wimped out” and went to my suite. They were very understanding but called me later to say that some of our cousins, the Werner’s, were at the restaurant. I was sorry to have missed them. They had kids around the same ages as ours and we went to their house around Christmas for many years.

Father Bill is away and so I was saying two Masses on certain days. I don’t mind it because I head back to the suite right afterwards. We had the holyday on August 15th. One of our priest died, Fr. Francis Martin. The funeral was on Thursday but Wednesday ia my DAY OFF and Joan Ward had the week off, so she drove me up to near Frederick and I had Mass for Loretta and Andy Favret. A neighbor also joined us as did Joan. It was Loretta’s 90th birthday. We had a great time and then Joan dropped me off at Fr. Martin’s wake and a vigil Mass. I saw lots of priests and some old friends. My friend, Ellen drove me home. The next day, I did a funeral here and I haven’t done that for a while. I had lots of help but I was exhausted.  I saw a few people during the week; but mostly I stayed in my suite.

On Saturday, the 19th, Colleen and Monty picked me up and we went to my niece, Mary’s house for Mass with the SDC group. Nice attendance and we had a pot luck dinner after. Maggie’s family came and they took me to Lexington Park, where I stayed at the Hampton. I got a chance to visit with Fr. Mike Dolan.

On Sunday, I just lounged around until 3pm when Brenda Ridgell came and picked me up. We went to her’s and Heavy’s house for a great dinner of crab cakes and friend chicken with them and their kids. Then some more parishioners came and we played cards till 9:30pm. I had a ball but was glad to get to bed.

On Monday, the 21st, Sister Kass drove us to BINGO with Maggie, Kerry, and the gang. I didn’t win but had a good time. Kass drove me back to Blessed Sacrament and we arrived in time to see the eclipse with people standing near the front door. It was cool!!! Then I had the  5:30pm Mass and I was ready for bed.

Tuesday was light but I had the 8am Mass on the 23rd (my 73rd birthday). I offered it for my Mom and Dad (an Asian custom!) then went to lunch with my cousin, Mike Caruso, Joan Ward, Fr. Jim Bocabella and his brother Paul, Fr. Foley, and Brian (who treated us – and had a delicious cake)

In the afternoon, Joan drove and we picked up Joan Beall and we went to Stoney’s in Prince Frederick for crabs! We had 26 people, Maggie and her kids and grandkids, – including 2 month old Quinn Margaret, three of Marie’s kids and a grandchild, Sonny. My cousins, Rick and Peg and their daughter, Kate – who is expecting in December, Rose and Patty Petrone, JoAnn Adams, and Fr. John Dakes. We stayed till after 9pm and had great crabs and much laughter. I really appreciated Joan’s driving and I was glad to get to bed.

Thursday, the 24th and Friday, the 25th, I had Masses and doctors’ appointments. My doctors tell me that if I have birthdays like the 73rd, I should have some more until 100. I don’t know if that even interest me; but I do encourage people to live to 73 because I certainly enjoyed that birthday. In addition to the meals I wrote about, I also got lots of phone messages, card, and post on Facebook. I am grateful for all of it!!!

On Saturday, Rob and Amanda, whose wedding I will have on September 9th came and drove me to his family home where we had a lovely luncheon with his Mom. His dad was in Arabia. It was delicious and fun and they brought me home in time for confessions at 4pm. I went to bed early.

I began this message in the morning that day but here I am on Monday, August 28th and I still haven’t sent this out.

On Sunday, the 27th, I had the 7:30am Mass and a good homily on the Gospel. I returned to the rec tory and made a big breakfast of eggs and bacon and toast. I left bacon for the other priests and they liked it. I had two baptisms at 2pm in the church. Please remember Caroline Marie and Simone and their families in your prayers.

Today, the feast of St. Augustine, I had the 8am Mass and will have the 5:30pm Mass also. Two of the priests are off today, so Fr. Alec and I are covering.

Although I have spent a lot of time over in my suite, I have used the phone a lot. I’ve called Marilyn Cavallaro, Jerry Trancone, and Joan Beall daily as Jerry’s still recovering from his cataract surgery, Frank Cavallaro is in a rehab and is not doing well, and Fr. Beattie is back in Georgetown Hospital because his leg is still bad. I also talked to lots of friends but please keep all of them in your prayers. Keep me too.
