FEAST OF ST. LAWRENCE 8.10.17

August 10th, 2017

Over the last few days, a number of people have said to me that they were concerned about my health since they hadn’t seen anything on Paddy for almost a month. I am writing what I think will be a short message to allay any concerns.

I’ve been hanging around my suite much of the time as we had a couple of heat waves and rain. Neither does my breathing much good. Also I am tired. I can fall asleep right after Jeopardy and might sleep through to 7am. I am blessed that – at least for now – I don’t have to get up and use the bathroom during the night!

I have been on the phone a lot. Speaking almost daily to Father Trancone, Joan Beall, Maggie, and the Cavallaro’s.

Father Trancone had cataract surgery and has not had an easy recovery BUT it seems to be progressing now. Frank Cavallaro had a fall and has been in the hospital or rehab much of the last few week. Marilyn was visiting him daily but now has pneumonia and is limited. He is a bit confused and doesn’t know why she and he are not together at home. Fr. Jim Beattie is also ill and back at Georgetown hospital. It’s still the leg. Maggie’s (and my) friend, JoAnn had a slight (according to her) heart attack. She is recovery but back at “On Our Own”.

I also “caught up” with Fr. Tom Kredel, Pat Berry, Kate and Bill Kredel, Pat Sinclair, Anna Marie Kinerney, and the Petrones. Joe Stoutz , Fr. John Bohrer , and Fr. Carmen and I have talked. I really don’t like the phone; I’d rather see people but its hard to get out. I am using Uber and went to a funeral at Little Flower – where I saw some Good Counsel people; I also went to Collin’s for Peg Sampogna’s wake and saw lots of friends from Camillus. Had some nice meals with Barry and Barbara, and Father Jim and his brother Paul, and a couple of lunches with Joan Ward. Also had a nice lunch with Fr. Pat Lewis from Little Flower. He had assisted me at the funeral and drove me home. He and Fr. Alec are friends.

I’ve stsaying in my suite except to do Masses. I had a great wedding last week and was taken to the reception by Colleen and Monty. Saw a lot of SD Catholics there including Sister Agnes, who came down from NJ. The Petrones pick me up when they are taking Fr. Trancone out, so I really don’t do much.

I’m sorry if my failure to write worried you! If I were ill, you’d be informed!

Keep me and all my intentions in your prayers. Like Bradon, whom I baptized last weekend. Know that you all are prayed for daily.

Oh, I forgot!! August is the months of lots of birthday. Yesterday was Mary Ann Pearson, my niece and God child. Today is Tom DuBusky. On the 5th, was Maureen’s. She was 70 and missed by all of us. Now I have to go!

SATURDAY OF THE 14TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME 7.15.17

July 15th, 2017

It is actually Saturday, the 15th as I begin this but I will finish it tomorrow and publish it then. CHANGED MY MIND AND AM SENDING IT NOW.

When last I wrote, it was the 26th of June. Monday was my DAY OFF but I did the evening Mass as Fr. Ron was away. I did meet with the man interested in joining the church and we’ll settle on a time once the summer is over.

Tuesday, the 27th, I had the 11am Mass and then I returned to the coolness of my suite in the rectory. It has been hot but bearable. I think the heat is coming.

On Wednesday, the 28th, I went to see Dr. Solomon. He says I need more oxygen and we are going to “fight” with the company I get oxygen from. They are just not dependable. We’ll see. I stayed over in the parish center because they  took apart my chair to re-carpet the stairs. I had the evening services but when I came back, everything was done and I rode up to my cool suite and stayed in all night.

On the 29th, I had the 8am Mass and then the 11. I stayed in the center and met someone. I came back and ate and then went up to my suite.

On Friday, the 30th, met with some appointments in the afternoon and then had the services. Was glad to get back to the suite. Some told me about seeing a poster on Facebook that said, “I am in my room, the temperature on the air conditioning is 62 degrees. The penguins and I are very comfortable!” I wish I could find it. I’d add it to this message. I called Terry Odien as he retired today. He was in Buffalo for a family wedding. He was director of priests personnel for about 15 years for the diocese of Camden, NJ and was looking forward to retiring and travelling.

On Saturday, July 1st, the heat wave started. I stayed in my suite till 5pm and then went to the sacristy. I had the 5:30pm Mass. The deacon preached and as soon as it was over, I went back to Antarctica!

On Sunday the 2nd. I had the 9am Mass and again the deacon preached. I had planned to stay in but the Petrone’s and Fr. T were available for lunch, so we went out. They keep the  car cold for Patty and ;me!!

Did say the 11am Mass on Monday but took the rest of the day off in my suite.

On Tuesday, the 4th, I took an Uber to St. Camillus for the 8am Mass, which was for Mary Mudd on her birthday. I saw all kinds of former parishioners and had a great time. I concelebrated, as did Fr. Beattie and Fr. Lockman. The pastor presided and did a great job. We had food and ice cream and cake afterwards. God love her, Ginny Beall drove me home and I was glad to be back in the cool. I watched “a Washington 4th” and enjoyed myself. The Petrones offered to come an take me to a cookout at their house but I was exhausted.

On the 5th, I stayed in my suite till I came over for the 5:30pm Mass; then back to my suite.

On Thursday, the 6th, I had the 8am Mass and then I had the 9:30am Mass for the vacation Bible school and then I had the 5:30pm Mass. I was cooling off in my suite between Masses.

on Friday, the 7th, I am still waiting to hear about the oxygen. Evening Mass and early to bed.

On Saturday, the 8th, I had the group baptisms (but only one) please keep Valentina Marie and her family in your prayers. I saw two people for spiritual direction and then had the 5:30pm Mass. Early to bed.

Slept in and took an Uber to meet Fr. T and the Petrones for lunch. They brought me back and I had the 5:30pm Mass.

On Monday, the 10th, I took an Uber over to St. Camillus and preached at Albert Sindall’s funeral. He was 99 and I loved him and his wife, Ruth, when I first came to the parish in 1972. I have married some of the children and baptized lots of grandchildren and great grandchildren. It was great to see them and many old friends. Then I took an Uber to Carroll Manor, where one of our retired priests was having a funeral. I got there at the end but it was good to see so many priests and some members of his family. So please keep Fr. Ed Evans and Al Sindall and their families in your prayers. Once again, Fr. T and the Petrones and I went out to lunch.

The real HEAT WAVE has arrived and I only came over ONLY for Masses on Tuesday and Wednesday. On Thursday, the 13th, I had the Bible School Mass at 9:30 and the 11am Mass and then retired to my cool space.

On Friday, I had the 8am, the Bible school, and the 5:30pm. and returned quickly to the rectory and coolness. I forgot to mention that Fr. Alec is on retreat with parish families, Fr. Percy had cataract surgery on Thursday, the 6th and the other eye on Thursday, the 13th. He is making an amazing recovery and is around – although I think he’s having a hard time reading the small print. Fr. Ron left us on Wednesday and now is pastor of Sacred Heart in Bowie. Fr. Bill Foley, our new pastor arrived and he and I have been busy – him with funerals.

Saturday, the 16th, I had the 8am Mass and then baptisms at 11 and 1. Please keep in your prayers, Rowan Patrick and James Arthur and their families. I am going up for the 4pm confessions and then back to the coolness!

I have the 9am Mass on Sunday, the 16th and then who knows? I’ll try not to take so long between articles.

I have talked on the phone a lot (it requires no movements except my mouth). I discovered the Diane Leach is up in Frederick, Md and is doing much better. Talked to Andy and La Favret and they are well and I hope to get up to see them in August. Barb is recovery from her surgery and met Fr. Jim at Our Lady of Grace. He is the new pastor there.

Fr. Beattie is back at Our Lady of Lourdes and hears confessions and concelebrate – so thanks for all those prayers. Spoke today with Muffin down at St. Michael’s. The McCoy clan is at the farm for the weekend. They always came down for Beth’s birthday (the 19th). I sent my love to them all. I talked to Frances Sampogna for her birthday and she brought me up to date on their  clan. I talked to Cindy Richards and got up to date on that family.

Oh, I have to go. Keep in touch.

MONDAY OF THE 12TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME

June 26th, 2017

Today is the 26th of June and my day off; so I thought I’d try to get something out to you. I last wrote on Maggie’s birthday, it was the 15th. We were all on “baby alert” as Kerry went into the hospital on Thursday at 5:30am. The baby didn’t come till Friday at 6:30am. They always have their own schedule. She and Mommy and Daddy are doing fine. I think Grandma is resting up but also happy. She was 7 lbs. 3 ounces and her name is Quinn Margaret Keith. Keep them all in your prayers.

Friday went by quickly and so did Saturday morning. I had twin baptisms at 10am. Please keep Louisa Dammen and Mae Bailey and their parents and Godparents in your prayers. I then had the 11zm Mass and took a nap. Mike, Sue, and Maggie picked me up around 4:30 and we went to Fishbone Grill in Annapolis for Maggie’s birthday dinner. Kass joined us and we had a great time. I was glad to get back in the oxygen.

Sunday, the 18th, I had the 10:30am Mass and then Patty and Rose Petrone brought Fr. T out and we all went to an Italian restaurant for Fathers’ Day. It was fun and then we took Molly to work and stopped for ice cream. I was glad again, to be in the AC and went to bed early.

Because Fr. Ron and Fr. Alec are both away, I told them I’d be happy to take a few extra Masses. On Monday, 19th, I had the 6:30am Mass. They were surprised to see me. I went back to bed and relaxed all day. That night, Fr. Jim picked me up and we drove to Silver Spring for our “every 4th month” dinner with Father John, Regis, and Mike. We had a great time and solved the problems of the church and world.

On Tuesday, I had the 11am and evening Masses. A lady came to see me for some help with the annulment process and I went to bed early.

On Wednesday, the 21st, longest day of daylight. I had the 6:30am again. Regis came for the 8am and we had coffee together. I worked on information with Rosalie about the baptism program. I had the evening Mass and then I met with the baptismal team and we had dinner in the rectory. I just enjoyed being with them so much but went to bed by 9pm.

On Thursday, I had the 6:30am Mass and then joined some of the seniors after the 8am Mass. Bill Mullan, two of his sons and his daughter-in-law joined us for refreshments and laughter. He looks well and is living at Rider Wood. His grandson, Patrick is still in Guatemala studying  Spanish for the summer. The young lady came to see me to ask some questions about the devil. She wondered why she’d never heard about him!

On Friday, Joan dropped me off at the barber to get my hair cut. She picked me up afterwards and she took me to visit Fr. Beattie. He is in a rehab place and wants out!! We had a nice visit. I also saw Meredith, a parishioner who is also taking rehab.

On Saturday, I slept in and just lounged in my suite till 5pm when I came for the 5:30pm Mass. The deacon preached and I went home quickly.

On Sunday, the 25th, I had the 7:30am Mass and again the deacon preached. I went home and had a big breakfast. I returned at 1:45 and had the group baptisms at 2pm. Only one baby. Her name is Quinn Grace. I had baptized her older brother Jack who is now 2. They were adorable. Please keep them, their parents and Godparents in your prayers. Long phone talk with Fr. T.

Today, My day off, I slept in and shaved and showered. Miss the pickup for the pantry by 15 minutes. We got a lot in the collection. I’m pleased. Someone who is thinking of joining the church, came to see me and we will make arrangements to bring him into full communion soon. I am going upstairs for the Benediction and the 5:30pm Mass.

Starting tomorrow, all the services will be in the chapel for three days. The pews in the church are being worked on. It is supposed to be nice tomorrow – not too hot and not humid. I may take an Uber to the O’Boyle residence and visit the guys.

JUNE 15,2017

June 16th, 2017

Today is Maggie’s 75th birthday. We will celebrate on Saturday.

I have not written lately because the weather has been so hot, I’ve tried to remain in my air conditioned suite as much as possible. I’ve also been to see my two doctors because my breathing has been difficult. I am on steroids and antibiotics for two weeks and then we’ll see how I’m doing. I will need to increase the amount of oxygen I’m getting, the present “purified air” machine are not sufficient. So enough of that.

Let’s see

On Thursday, June 1st, I had the evening (3pm Exposition & 5:30pm Mass) services and then went home.  Our rectory is being painted and so Humberto leaves dinner upstairs in my room. Bed early.

On Friday, June 2nd, I got up early to attend the men’s group meeting after the 6:30am Mass. Father Alec was speaking and he gave a great talk about how he came to be a priest. It was very well done and I learned some more things about him and his family. Then I went to Kindergarten graduation in the gym. It is always a delight. The children sing a number of songs about things they’ve learned like dinosaurs, ABC’s and counting, and they sing a couple of songs in other languages. The last song is to the tune of New York, New York and it says to “spread the news” to first grade because they are on their way. There isn’t a dry eye in the room. Then I went to lunch with a couple who are planning to get married. I saw the young friar, Will and gave First Communion to Helen with her family in the chapel.  Then I was ill and instead of Mass, I led a Communion Service at 5:30. Brian helped me get home to the rectory and I went right to bed and sleep. I don’t know what made me ill but I felt OK once I slept.

On Saturday, June 3rd, I had a few appointments and the 5:30pm Mass. I went back to the suite and early to bed.

On Sunday, the 4th, Maggie and MaryAnn came to the 9am Mass and then we headed to Patapsco State Park for a family reunion. It was the branch of the family that is my cousins, whose father was my grandfather’s youngest brother, Ed and Aunt Kathryn. They had 4 girls and one boy. I think there are 70 some descendants and many were there. It was great to see people of my generation and to be updated on the children. Some I had last seen when they were 7 or 8 and now they’ve graduated college. The weather was great and I had no problems with breathing. Got home before dark.

On Monday, the 5th, I sat at the front desk for Joan and around 11, tried to get an Uber to go to Fr. Trancone’s. It wouldn’t work – first time ever. So the Petrone girls picked up Jerry and then came and got me. We went to the Red, White, and Blue (a ribs place in Laurel) for a great lunch. Then my cousin, Rick came and installed new batteries in my chair. I had wanted to go out to dinner with him; but begged off because I still didn’t feel well.

On the 6th, after the evening services, I met with a couple from the Separated and Divorced group who got their annulment and I will marry in late July. Those people are a bright light in my old age.

On Wednesday, the 7th, I switched the 8am Mass for the evening Mass because one of the priest needed to be free in the evening. So after Mass, I came home and went to bed early. I can sleep so easily and quickly in the AC.

On Thursday, Joan dropped me off at the Shrine and I met a young man, Jeremiah. He had been staying at Madonna House in Canada and one of my friends there encourage him to meet me and talk. We had a good meal and conversation. He will let me know once he is settled. I took an Uber back and I learned why it didn’t work for me on Monday. My driver ( a retired DC police officer) told me that on Monday in Indiana, a woman called an Uber. Once she got in, she slashed the driver and he died. The police put the Uber system off line till they could find her name and credit card information. What a tragedy.

Friday, the 9th, there was a school Mass and I concelebrated. It was also to say “Goodbye” to Sister Marietta, a Holy Cross Sister who has been in the school since 1961. The community has been here for 90 years and as she is the last, a number of the sisters came to the Mass. I knew some of them from St. Bernard’s days. Sister Vivian and Kathy Johnson, who lived up 62nd Avenue. I was good to see them all and to remember all of the great Holy Cross sisters. I had the 11am Mass and the evening Mass, so I was glad to get home to bed and the AC.

On Saturday, I had the  11am Mass and then a nice Baptism. Please keep Ariella Brooke and her family in your prayers. I had the 4pm Confessions and went home early.

On Sunday, the 11th, I had the 10:30 Mass and Maggie, Mike and Sue showed up. What a nice surprise! they wanted to take me to lunch; but I had a baptism at 11:30. So they came to it. It was the grandchild of Maureen and Art Raimo, great friends from GC. I had baptized Anne, their daughter while I was there. I baptized Anne’s daughter 4 years ago and now William Arthur. Do keep all of them in your prayers. I really enjoyed the service and being with them all. I said, “Now get out of here, I know you are planning a party and William Arthur is looking forward to it.” Then we O’Connells headed to Clyde’s nearby. And the Buss party was on the other side of the restaurant. I stopped over and said hello! It was hot outside and I was glad to get back to my suite.

On Monday, the 12th, I went to see Doctor Lucas. I reported on my arm, which feels fine; so I guess the therapy was what it needed. She took blood and we’ll see what that says about  She suggested I go see Dr. Solomon, my pulmonary person. He is right next door. He was there, he was at Sibley. I just wanted to get back to the AC so I called in the afternoon. I couldn’t get an appointment for two weeks. I told Joan that because she wanted me to go to Sibley but I wanted to go home. Later that night, I got an email from her saying I had an 11am appointment with the doctor on Wisconsin Ave on Tuesday. She is like a dog with a bone but I was grateful.

On Tuesday, Joan drove me to the building and let me off. I had my oxygen on but by the time, I got to the office it was reading 67. A lady in the elevator was worried about me, I was breathing so much but I assure her I was OK and on my way to see the doctor. I sat in his office and got the reading up to 74. When the doctor came in – he is so funny! He said, “my nurse said that your number was so low, you really be in the hospital. I said, ‘ you don’t really know Father O’Connell; but there is no way, he’d go the hospital!’. So let’s see what’s going on.” I wasn’t getting oxygen because I had a sinus infection and blockage. He gave me steroids and antibiotics and I was to stay indoors. I’ve been trying and I think I am getting more oxygen. He says that my concentrators may not be enough, I may need straight oxygen but we’ll wait to see once the infections clears up. I went to my Tuesdays with Maury session because it was the last before Summer break. We discussed some topics for next year and then I went home. Joan brought me my prescariptions and I went to bed. I did get up for the deanery cookout but by the time I got down, only three guys were left. I hear it was a big success and I was sorry not to see the priests of the deanery.

On Wednesday, the 14th (Tish Rossi’s birthday), I stayed in the AC until the afternoon. I did the services and then had an appointment. I came home after 8pm and went to bed

I began this message on Thursday didn’t finish it because I had the evening services and then Carolyn drove me three blocks down Quesada to the home of a parishioner. They were hosting a “pot luck” supper for the Parish Council and a farewell for Father Ron. I was glad I went. We sat on their patio and the weather was clear and cool. Had some nice conversations with people. Pat dropped me off at the rectory and I was ready for bed.

I’m going to leave this message as listed for Thursday because it is Maggie’s birthday but as I write it is Friday and I waiting for our IT person to help with my computer. Then I have a 2pm appointment and the evening services. I’ll be ready for the AC and my bed tonight.

Barbara is doing well with her recovery. Joan B has that cough that hangs on for weeks, Peanut is not doing well and is resisting going to the hospital and we are all waiting to hear about Kerri and the baby. So keep all those intentions in your prayers. Know that all of you are in mine.

FEAST OF THE VISITATION, 5.31.17

May 31st, 2017

It’s been almost three weeks since I wrote but they’ve been busy. I wrote on May 13th. But then on the 18th, I went on a cruise out of Baltimore, that went to Bermuda and the Bahamas for 9 days and returned on Saturday, May 27th. Pat Berry. Sister Kass, Anna Marie Kinerney, my cousins, Rick and Peg Jensen and I shared a table at early sitting. We had a great time. It was the Jensen’s 40th wedding anniversary, on Sunday, the 21st. So we assembled in their balcony cabin and had Mass, they repeated their vows and then we had cocktails and dinner. It was lively but nothing like their wedding reception – I was there!

Finally, after many months (and years) of haranguing me about having a “scooter” on the ship, I gave in and rented one. What a difference!! It was so nice to ride – almost the whole length of the ship -to go to a meal, and arrive there still breathing normally. They took it from near my door at night and would get it re-charged; and return it the next morning to my door. I said how much I enjoyed it and so Kass said, “Well when are you going to come and get my Dad’s? I’ve had it in my apartment waiting for you to know you wanted it!!” Rick offered his son-in-law (James) and himself to come and get it. They did that on Memorial Day and it’s here in my parish office. I’m still figuring how to put it to the best use; but I’m not afraid that I won’t be able to drive it. That was one of my fears. I’d see them at Target and Cosko and I thought if I had one, I’d knock over some display with 200 cans!! I didn’t so, I’ll be riding it around the parish. Will keep you informed.

The cruise was very relaxing and I finally started reading again a book on my Kindle that was 757 pages, The Pillars of the Earth. I had started it about 10 years ago but stopped after 100 pages. It’s full of history and I really enjoyed it.

When we got back to Baltimore, Rick and Peg’s daughter, Kate picked us up and drove me home.

On Saturday, the 27th, I had a baptism. Please keep Seamus Nolan and his parents, Godparents, and family in your prayers. I went to a party afterwards and had a great time. Also caught up with two of my cousins. Then I had the 5:30pm Mass. The deacon preached so I just continued relaxing. I was glad to get in my own bed again, which I did before 7pm.

On Sunday the 28th, I had the 10:30am Mass and again the deacon preached. When I came back to my office, I saw that Maggie had called my cell phone three times. I called her immediately and she asked if I had listen to the messages. I said, “No, as soon as I saw you kept calling, I figured I’d better call right away.” She wanted me to know that Marie’s grandson, Ricky was going to sing before the start of the Indianapolis 500. It would be on channel 7. I turned it on and I was able to see him. He say America and it was beautiful. He has always been very musical – playing the organ and the piano. He has a great  voice and sang at Marie’s funeral. He’s in the army and looks great in his uniform. I know Marie was going around heaven telling anyone she didn’t know (that would be those who don’t go to BINGO) that he was her grandson. She was always a proud mother and grandmother.  And our whole family is proud of Ricky. I worked at my desk and went home and relaxed some more. I read the rest of the book and watched TV.

On the 29th, Memorial Day, I stayed in the air-conditioned room and read and watched TV. Around 4pm, Rick and James came with my ‘scooter’ and then Fr. Alec drove me, Father Ron, and Fr. Keith to Alfio’s to have supper together. It was a gift from a woman in Fr. Keith’s parish and she wanted to have supper in honor of her and her husband, who had just died. We toasted them and prayed for them in the grace that Fr. Ron said. It was a great evening.

On Tuesday, the 30th, I had the 11am Mass and then we had Tuesdays with (Fr.) Maury. It was a small group but we talked about topics for next year (in September). Then I met with someone for spiritual direction.

Also on the 27th, was Fr. John Bohrer and Fr. Dwight Birket’s priesthood anniversaries. I know they’d appreciate a prayer or two.

I forgot to mention that the rectory is being repaired and painted, so we don’t have normal schedule in the house.

Also I am meeting with a young man who is on a priesthood retreat and who will be ordained a priest on Saturday. Please keep Will in your prayers. – just found out that he will be ordained on Saturday, June 10th. I told him you were praying for him and he wanted to let you know that another week of prayer would be appreciated.

Also, I know that you know that my friend, Barbara had surgery and it went well. She is in a rehab place and in pain. I’ve haven’t been able to talk with her but please keep her in your prayers as well.

Today is also Sharon Beall’s birthday and the feast day of Fr. Ray Fecteau’s parish in Darnestown. Prayers for that would also be appreciated.

I went to therapy today and they tell me I have passed. It is true that my arm doesn’t hurt anymore; so maybe there is hope for my leg. Keep praying.

OUR LADY OF FATIMA, 5.13.17

May 13th, 2017

Today is the 100th anniversary of the first appearance of Our Lady to the children of Fatima. I shall be watching the Pope’s visit there and his canonization of two of the visionaries . Pray for his safety. It is also the anniversary of the attempted assassination of Pope John Paul II.

Today is also the 45th anniversary of my ordination. I am praying especially for my four classmates of ordination. They are Ray Fecteau, Ray Wadas, and John Mattingly. Bill Hines is deceased. Please remember all of us today in your prayers. They have been good friends and the years with them have been blessed.

I have not written for awhile because life has been busy.

I wrote on April 30th and I did go to bed early.

On Monday, May 1st,  I went for therapy on my right arm.  It still bothers me if I stretch out my arm to reach for something. Of course, as the old vaudeville act says. The guy goes to the doctor and say, “My arm hurts whenever I turn it this way” and the doctors says, “then don’t turn it that way!”  I hope this therapy helps; it’s been dragging on since January. In the afternoon, I met with a man who is interested in coming into the church. He has been married to a Catholic for many years and come to Mass with her. I gave him Joe’s book and we’ll meet again.

On Tuesday, the 2nd. had 11am Mass and then had Tuesdays with Maury. We talked about Mary under the many titles she has. A lot of people spoke about devotions their families had to Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Lourdes, Fatima, and Caridad, patroness of Cuba. I told them about Our Lady, Undoer of Knots. It’s a devotion dear to Pope Francis. My cousins gave me a picture of it and I have learned a lot about her and the devotion. We had a great time. At 4:40, I went to see my pulmonary doctor. He took some tests and says I’m doing fine. All the pollen is causing me trouble but the rain is getting rid of a lot of it.

Oh, I forgot to say that as I’m not driving, I’ve been using Uber to get around. It is so easy and not expensive and it is charged to my credit card. I think I’ve taken 10 of them. The drivers are very nice.

On Wednesday, the 3 rd., I took Uber to Wheaton and got my hair cut and my beard trimmed. Then I Ubered to the 1st Wednesday gathering of the retired priests. It was good to see all the guys. Fr. Beattie came but he was not feeling well and the lady from Lourdes came and took him home. I took an Uber home. Had the 5:30pm Mass and then a friend picked me up and we went to the annual fund raiser dinner for St. Ann’s Home. Nice event and saw a lot of people I knew. Called Kass to wish her a happy birthday but didn’t get through.

Had the 6:30am Mass on Thursday, May 4th and the 8am. We priests traded around because of funerals, etc. So I went to take a nap after lunch. I forgot I was meeting a young man who is being confirmed this Sunday. Fortunately, He met the housekeeper and she woke. We had a great time and talk.

On Friday, the 5th (Cinco de Maio), I took Uber to Stone Ridge and gave my talk on Jesus to about 15 alumnae of the Madame’s schools. They were very receptive but had questions. Pat drove me back. In the afternoon, I Ubered to therapy  and then had exposition. Met with my little girl taking instructions and set a date for her First Communion. Then I had the 5:30pm Mass. We have a guest for the weekend. Fr. Jim McBurney is and Augustinian whose family lived in St. B’s and I met him years ago. He is in Philly but had a family wedding nearby and will stay with us till Monday. Nice guy.  I went to bed early as we were having First Communion on Saturday. I did contact Bob, Bill, Tom, and Richard as today is their 45th anniversary of ordination.

Today, we had Masses at 9:30, 11, and 1PM. 150 children received. I went to bed early.

Sunday, the 7th, I had the 9AM Mass but stayed for the 10:30 because Billy was being confirmed. Fr. Regis did a good job and the people loved seeing Billy confirmed. His parents, grandmother, Godparents, cousins and friends all came and our people greeted them afterwards. This is such a welcoming parish. Fr. Peter Ryan, S.J. was here and concelebrated. His brother, Bill was a seminarian at Queen of Peace, when I was there. A sister and her family live in the parish. Peter is now a teacher at Sacred Heart Seminary in Michigan and Bill is a missionary in Togo. Peter offered to drive me, after Mass, to Maplewood, a senior apartment near St. Jane de Chantel parish. We caught up on all the news. I was joining my friends for brunch. A new lady joined us who has been a parishioner of Blessed Sacrament, who just moved there. We all had a great time. I Ubered home and took a nap.

On Monday, the 8th I took the day off and just worked on the newsletters that had been returned. I got a lot done.

On Tuesday, the 9th, I had the 11am Mass and decided not to go to the anniversary Mass and dinner for the priests. I just relaxed.

On Wednesday, the 10th I went to see about getting a cortisone because my whole body had ached for the last few nights. I was sent to an Orthopedic doctor and she explained that that shot is for joints that hurt. My pain is in the muscle between my elbow and my shoulder. So I am on steroids for six days and see if it helps. I still am going to therapy and I think my arm feels better and doesn’t hurt when I move it. We’ll see! Had the 5:30pm Mass.

On the 11th, it rained all day – but the pollen is gone. I Ubered to Prince George’s Plaza and met an old friend for lunch. We had a great time. I had Exposition and the 5:30pm Mass. Then Barry Fitz and Barbara picked me up and we went to Alfio’s for supper. Delicious and much laughter. We also celebrated the Sacrament of the Anointing and a Communion service. Barb is having surgery next week. Keep her in your prayers. I am so blessed in my friends.

On Friday, the 12th, I had the 8am Mass. Then I Ubered back and forth to the therapy. I think I’m doing better. Then I met a young priest friend, Rob who is being made a pastor for the first time. Keep him and his new parishioners in your prayers. I went to bed early.

Today, I had a baptism at 10am. Please keep Lorelei Clair and her family in your prayers.  My niece, Mary Ann will pick me up around 2pm and we’ll go to Sothern Maryland for a home Mass with some of the separated and divorced Catholic group in Calvert County. She’ll bring me home and I will just relax and probably sleep in tomorrow as I only have the 5:30pm Mass. A very happy and blessed Mothers’ day to all.

Because of the newsletter, I’ve “reconnected” with lots of people. I’ve talked on the phone with many of them and received nice emails and notes. I am so glad that with God’s grace, I was able to finally get them out. Everyday some return needing another address but Anywho.com is great at helping me find them again.

Also Fr. Jim Beattie is in the hospital. They are still working on that leg -its been almost two years of on and off pain. Please keep him in your prayers.

Lastly, it will be announced this weekend that our pastor, Fr. Ron Potts is leaving us and becoming the pastor of Sacred Heart in Bowie. The pastor there, Msgr. Charlie Parry (who was a high school kid at St. Camillus) will become pastor of St. Patrick’s in Norbeck and the pastor there, Fr. Bill Foley will come and be our pastor. This will all happen in July. I will miss Fr. Ron as we have been friends since I met him in the summers when I would cover the parish of St. John’s in Hollywood, when I was at Good Counsel; but I have know Bill since we lived together at Our lady of Lourdes.

Change is a sign of life and part of our priestly life. but do keep these men and their parishes (present and future) in your prayers.

Oh, I leave for a cruise this coming Wednesday -the 18th, and return on the 27th, so no Paddy till after I return.

THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER, 4.30.17

April 30th, 2017

I have the 10:30am Mass today and will begin an article before Mass and afterwards.

I last wrote on Thursday, April 20th.

On Friday, the 21st, I had the 8am Mass and Exposition and the 5:30pm Mass. I met with the young girl who wants to be baptized before she goes to a local Catholic High school. It’s going well. I returned to the air conditioning for the evening.

On Saturday, April 22nd, Patrick, the seminarian drove me over to Ft. Lincoln cemetery and I met Maggie and her children and Marie’s children and we prayed at her grave. It was her first anniversary – hard to believe it’s a year. Then we went to breakfast at IHOP and Marie, through Mary treated all of us 14 of us! Mary dropped me back at the rectory and I just stayed in the AC.

I had the 12:30pm Mass on Sunday, the 23rd. And returned to the AC immediately.

Took Monday, the 24th off and stayed in my suite all day. Pollen is very bad. A friend of Carmen’s came by as she is here visiting her son’s family. We had a nice visit.

On Tuesday, the 25th, I went to my first therapy session for my arm and leg. We’ll see what comes of that. I had exposition and evening Mass. Early to bed.

On Wednesday, I had the 8am Mass and then Brian came and drove me to Magiano’s where we had lunch with Fr. Jim Boccabella and his brother, Paul. Brian put a cool picture of us on Facebook and if I learn how to do it, I’ll post it here soon.

Thursday, the 27th, I had the 8am and the evening Mass. I had a visitor for spiritual direction and spent much of the time in my office; opening nice notes from people who received the newsletter and re-addressing many that were returned as undeliverable. I was able to find new addresses. I am so glad I worked on the newsletter.

On Friday, the 28th, I had the 8am Mass and then Joan drove me to the dentist. It went fine and he took x-rays so I guess I’ll be going back. Talked on the phone most of the day.

Slept in Saturday, the 29th and came over to work at my desk around 1pm. Had confessions 4 to 5:15. when I came out, my cousin, Andrew Gibbons was here to drive me to his sister’s house for supper with his wife and kids and Maggie’s husband, Rich and their son, Aidan. We had a great dinner and lots of laughs. Their mother, my cousin, Ellie called on Skype or whatever they call it. We could hear and see her and she could hear and see us. It was neat.

Today, I had the 10:30am Mass. Maggie, Sean, and Aidan all came. It was the choir Mass and beautiful music. I preached on Jesus not knowing he was Divine till the Resurrection. Everyone seemed comfortable with it. I walked to the front door in case anyone wanted to talk about it; but all the comments were positive. I am giving a similar presentation at Stone Ridge on Friday.

After Mass, Rose and Patty Petrone picked me up. With Molly in the car, we went and picked up Father Trancone. We went to a nice Italian place near Annapolis for a good meal. Then we drove Molly to work. We went shopping at Wal-Mart – (Rose and I stayed in the car). then we took Fr. T back to O’Boyle and the ladies brought me home. I think I’m going to bed because I have therapy tomorrow around 11:30am,

THURSDAY OF THE OCTAVE OF EASTER, 4.20.17

April 20th, 2017

Today is Thursday and I have had a wonderful Holy Week and I want to share it with you.

I last wrote on Saturday before Palm Sunday. It was an easy day for me. I had my two baptisms and ask that you remember Constance Joy and Annamieke Francine and their families in your prayers. I met someone for confession and then went to bed early.  On Palm Sunday, Rose came and picked me up and she, Patty, Philip and I met Father T for lunch at a nice Greek restaurant that we’ve visited before. It was a nice meal and I came home for the 5:30PM Mass. I saw Fr. Alec and the back door greeting people before Mass and I asked him to come and see me.  He agreed to go up and down the aisles and bless the Palm, which I just couldn’t do. I told the people that I borrowed the idea of a “pinch hitter” from the Nationals (our baseball team), which used a “pinch hitter” for the game the other day and he hit a home run! They laughed and applauded Father’s kind and generous gift to the old priest!

On Monday, the 10th, my friend and old roommate, Doug picked me up and we joined his wife, Kathleen, our friend, Mike, and Carlo for lunch. We had a great time and “caught up”. I took the 5:30PM Mass so that the other priests could go to the Chrism Mass. I use to enjoy that but it’s too much moving around now; but it is good to see all the priests of the Archdiocese together. I heard the dinner was good also.

On Tuesday, I had the 8AM Mass and then at Noon said a Mass in the center for the Tuesdays with Maury group. We had about 25. I passed my chalice around so they could see it closer up. We had a good meal afterwards. I met with the young lady who wants to be baptized and then we had “the light is on for you” confessions from 6:30 to 8PM. All 4 of us heard and it was constant. I love it! Mike brought up the Christmas newsletter and I began to put on labels.

Wednesday, the 12th, I had 8AM Mass and then I brought a woman into full Communion and we had confessions again in the evening. Spent most of the day, putting on labels and Joan ran them through the stamp machine.

It was Holy Thursday, and I spent most of the label getting the Christmas newsletter labeled and mailed. At lunch, I mentioned that because of not driving, I would have to miss visiting the 7 churches. Fr. Alec offered to drive me after the evening Mass. I concelebrated the Mass at 7pm and after exposition, we headed out. He chose a nice route and churches that he had checked on their hours of adoration and if they had easy access. We started with our chapel, and then went to St. Thomas, Annunciation, Little Flower, Our Lady of Lourdes, St. Bartholomew’s, and Our Lady of Mercy. We got to OLOM at 10:29 and they were closing at 10:30. As we left, Fr. Alec asked if I was tired; but I said, “No, this has invigorated me”. So he said that the assistant pastor had said if we were up to it, we could come by the rectory for a ltiile refreshment. I’m so glad we went. Fr. Chris, the pastor, Fr. Bill, and two seminarians, Tom and Sean made us feel most welcome. We sat out and the garden and laughed and shared about the priesthood. We closed by saying Night Prayer together. We got home around 12:30 and it was one of the nicest Holy Thursdays (the anniversary of the priesthood) that I can remember.

I am enclosing an article that I wrote for the newsletter of the Separated and Divorced Catholic group in the Archdiocese. It is called “At the Well” and as I am the chaplain, they asked me to write something for Lent in March and for Holy Week in April. Here it is.

I hope that Lent has been a faith filled journey for you and that your Lenten program has brought you to a deeper relationship with Jesus. Today, I want to share with you a journey that my family use to take every Holy Thursday and that I have tried to keep up during the years of the priesthood. My Dad was a U.S. Marshall and knew the city of Washington like the back of his hand. In those days, we didn’t have Mass in the evenings because we use to fast from Midnight; so on Holy Thursday, he would drive our Mother and us four kids around to visit 7 Churches. In each church, there was an Altar of Repose, decorated beautifully and full of candles. The Blessed Sacrament was in a special tabernacle only used that night. In each church, people would be “in adoration” until the morning of Good Friday. Every year, we visited Immaculate Conception (where my parents were married); St. Anthony’s (where each of us children were Baptized); St. Martin’s (where we went to school), The Franciscan Monastery; and the crypt of the Shrine (the Upper Church was not built yet). Then every year, my Dad would surprise us with two “new churches”. We visited St. Joseph’s on Capitol Hill, St. Mary’s on 5th Street, St. John Baptism de la Salle, St. Matthew’s cathedral and the chapel at Trinity College to name of few of those I remember seeing for the first time. You would say an Our Father, a Hail Mary, and a Glory Be in each church and make a wish if it was the first time you had been to that church. I always prayed that I would come back to that church again sometime – never guessing that I would visit almost all of them and have the privilege of celebrating Mass in them. It’s a great custom and many people still do it. I hope to go this year and know that you and your needs will be taken to the churches in prayer. Have a blessed Holy Week.

I did indeed go and carried in my prayers all of them and all of you.

On Good Friday, I joined in Morning Prayer and then Ginny drove Joan Beall over. It was fun to visit and they brought cookies!.  I gave them a bunch of the newsletters to distribute in the parish at St. Camillus. I mailed out about 500 of them (at $.91 cents a piece) and I decided to hand them out when possible. I, then led the Stations of the Cross at Noon. Then I heard confessions from 12:30 till 2PM. Then I was on the altar with Fr. Percy at 3PM for the Passion of the Lord service.  Everything was great and well attended but after a little supper, I went to bed.

On the 15th, I heard confessions from Noon till 1:30. Nothing makes you feel more like a priest than hearing confessions. Then my nephew, Jimmy and his kids, Sonny and Trevor, came and took me to Maggie’s. We met Rose at RIP’S for lunch (and to pick up my wallet – which I had left in Rose’s car at the Palm Sunday Greek lunch!). We had a good time but I went to bed early.

On Easter Sunday, the 16th, Mike drove Sue, Maggie, and me to Our Lady of Perpetual Help church in Edgewood, Maryland – near Annapolis so I could preside at the 10AM Mass.  Saw lots of old friends and family after Mass. They had great cupcakes (400 of them) and cookies. All made by parishioners and given out. I, then presided at the Noon Mass, which was in English and Spanish. I was surprised how easily the Spanish came back to me and they tell me I did well. I only preached in English. Kass drove me by her new digs  nearby and then we went to Maggie’s. Sue and Mike served us a great ham dinner and then we played cards. I was ready for bed around 9PM.

On Easter Monday, we all went to BINGO. Maggie goes regularly and Sister Kass, JoAnn, and Kerrie often go. I had a good time but won nothing. Lots of laughs (but mutedly because you can’t disturb the calling of numbers.) Kass drove me home and we stopped by the Scanlon wake. I knew I wouldn’t be up to the funeral on Tuesday. I gave lots of newsletters to Maggie, Kass, and Anna Marie Kinerney to distribute. I only have about 20 left – I had 700 printed.

On Easter Tuesday, the 18th, I had the 8am Mass and the 11, so I took a nap in the afternoon. I had an appointment with the neurologist at 4:15pm. He told me the MRI didn’t show any serious issues and that he recommend I go for therapy for the right arm and my leg. I will look into that next week. For now, I still won’t drive.

On Easter Wednesday, the 19th, I had the 8am Mass. Saw someone for spiritual direction and then went to lunch at the rectory. Stayed the rest of the day in the air conditioning because the pollen is terrible.

Today, I had the 8AM Mass and will have the 11. Then I think it’s back to the suite and the air conditioning.

I had heard from a number of people who got the Christmas newsletter and I loved hearing from them. I may have to run a few more off and people have asked for copies for family and friends. It was worth all the time and work!

I forgot to mention that I carried you and all your intentions with me to the 7 churches on Holy Thursday and on the Stations of the Cross on Good Friday, and to the Masses I celebrated on Easter. Hope you felt the Graces and had a blessed Easter.

APRIL 8th, VIGIL OF PALM SUNDAY

April 8th, 2017

Today is Saturday and I was supposed to be down at Maggie’s but yesterday got so hectic that I cancelled the trip and went to bed. I had a nice long and restful sleep and today, I am “cleaning my desk”. I am going to do two baptisms later today. Fr. Alec had agreed to take them, but they are families whose older child I baptized. It will be nice to see them. Then I am free till the 5:30pm Mass on Palm Sunday.

But let me bring you up to date since last Friday, (March 31st).

I had the 11AM Mass and then, Father Alec drove me and him to Stone Ridge to hear confessions. I joined the priests for supper in the rectory and went to bed early.

On Saturday, April 1st, I had the 11AM Mass and spent some time clearing my office of a lot of paper that keeps accumulating. At 3pm, a nice couple from the parish picked me up and we drove to Annapolis for my cousin, Jean Denney’s 70th birthday party at her son’s home. I enjoyed the conversations down and back. I had baptized their grand daughter, Maeve two years ago; but we didn’t have much time to talk then; but we made up for it on the trips. All of my cousins, who were at the gathering we had in Ocean City, Maryland a few months ago, were at the party – and some who didn’t make it, came to this soirée. I had a great time but was glad to get in bed.

On Sunday, the 2nd, I heard confessions for CCD at 9AM and had a nice breakfast in the rectory and relaxed until the evening Mass at 5:30PM.  Went to bed early.

On Monday, the 3rd, I just stayed in my suite and cleaned up my desk there. I did watch the Nat’s opener. It was a nice day and they won!

On Tuesday, April 4th, I had the 11AM Mass and then went to the center for Tuesdays with Maury. We discussed Holy Week and some of our customs and liturgies. We had hot dogs and crackerjacks in honor of Opening Day. I had to leave early as I had another MRI at 1:30pm. It went well. It is an “open” MRI and I sit up and there is no tube to go into. I can wear my oxygen and I said the rosary. It only took about 35 minutes. Joan drove me and I was back for First Communion interviews and the 5:30pm Mass.

On Wednesday, the 5th, I met someone for spiritual direction. Had two more interviews and the Exposition and 5:30pm Mass.

Thursday, the 6th was a real crazy day – weather wise. I had the 8am Mass and then met someone around 11am. Then a big storm came up, with lots of wind and hail and rain. It tore part of the roof off  of St. Aloysius  church in downtown DC. There were tornado watches up and down route 270. Then the sun shone. I stayed in my office. Heard a confession and did an interview for First Communion  (my last – I enjoyed them all). Then I had the 5:30pm Mass and during supper saw a rainbow on Quesada.

On Friday, the 7th, I had the 8am Mass and then Brian drove me to Stone Ridge for a talk on “The call of St. Matthew”. I enjoyed preparing for it. Then I had Mass with a group of alumnae from schools run by the Madams of the Sacred Heart. They were lovely. Pat Byers, a teacher and a friend of many years, drove me home. When I got back to the office, I found that I couldn’t get an X-ray of my arm and that my Christmas newsletter would not be done early enough to have my niece pick them up. Everything seemed as crazy as the weather on Thursday. Since I was suppose to be picked up by my nephew, Michael and taken to Maggie’s; I called and cancelled and went to bed.

Even though it is going to be Holy Week, I think my life will be slower next week. I’ll let you know.

THURSDAY OF THE FOURTH WEEK, 3.30.17

March 30th, 2017

March 20th, I spent the whole day in my suite – relaxing, taking naps, and catching up by watching episodes of TV that I had missed. Came down for meals and to visit the guys.

On Tuesday, the 21st, I had the 11am Mass and then Tuesdays with Maury. We talked about our Lenten programs and customs. It was very good. Joan, then picked me up and we went to see a Neurologist. He was v aery nice and I will see him and have some test done to try to find out about the problems with my right foot. In the evening, Brian treated me to the soup bowls project in the gym. We pick out a bowl and pay for it. They are made by art students in the area and other volunteers. You get some delicious soup and bread and visit. It is a great project and one I’ve supported for years. It helps the SOME (So Others May Eat) project in the city. We must have had over 200 people who participated. I saw lots of old friends – including Sister Rosemary Mangen, who went to St. Martin’s many years ago.

I can’t remember why but I took the 5:30AM Mass on Wednesday, the 22nd. I must have had an important meeting at 11AM but I don’t know what it was. I did First Communion interviews in the afternoon and then I met a couple from SDC.

On Thursday, the 23rd, I had the 8AM Mass and then went to have blood taken and had the 11AM Mass. Then I took Uber to St. Luke’s to hear confessions. Gail B works there and she offered me a ride home and we stopped for supper. It was a good day.

On Friday, the 24th, again I had the 8AM Mass then someone came to see me about Spiritual direction. I had an important meeting in the rectory and then came over for another Spiritual direction appointment. Then some interviews for First Communion. I was ready for bed around 8PM.

On Saturday, the 25th, I had a baptism at noon. It was the great grandchild of a couple who were in my first parish, St. Camillus. The woman has died but the husband, who is 97 still lives in the parish. He wasn’t able to come to the baptism but I knew a lot of the kids and grandkids and we had a great visit. Please keep Matthew St. Clair and all the Sindall family in your prayers. I had the 5:30PM Mass but the deacon preached. After Mass, a fellow from GC and his teenage son stopped in for a visit. Great to see them. I went to bed before 8PM.

On Sunday, the 26th, I had the 9AM Mass and again the deacon preached. I had another baptism at 11:30AM in the chapel. Again, old friends whom I married and baptized their first child. It was great to see their families again. Please keep Mary John and all her family in your prayers. Then I took Uber again. I made a mistake in putting in the address I wanted to go to. I put NW when I meant NE. It turned out to be more expensive but I learned something. I went to the Franciscan Monastery Hall for the 50th anniversary of dear friends, Maureen and Rob. I got a chance to see their children and grandchildren and friends from St. B’s. It was a great party. Then I took Uber to Joan Beall’s house and had a nice visit with her and her kids (whom I don’t get to see often enough). I had a good time and they offered to take me home; but I knew I could be home in 20 minutes by Uber and they wouldn’t have to deal with Sunday night traffic. I was home in 18 minutes and I was ready for bed.

I took my DAY OFF as time to straighten up my suite and just relax.

On Tuesday, the 28th, I was supposed to have the MRI but their machine was broken, so I worked at the office. My 16 page Christmas letter is at the printers and should be in your hands by Easter. That will be so nice to have done. I had a few First Communion interviews and then the evening Mass. In bed early.

On Wednesday, the 29th, I had the 11AM Mass and was supposed to have lunch with Fr. T and the Petrone’s; but they were ill and we have reschedule to next week. I spent the evening talking on the phone to lots of friends. I was in bed by 9PM.

Today, I had the 8AM Mass and will have the 11 as well. Then Brian is picking me up so we can meet my cousin, Michael Caruso for lunch. Saturday is his birthday and the three of us try to get together and celebrate birthdays with a luncheon. Always fun.

I had a great talk this week with Kevin Shearer. He had a health issue and is now home. Please keep him in your prayers. Also have increased the people on my prayer list. Please keep them on yours too.

Tomorrow, Fr. Alec and I will ride together to hear confessions at Stone Ridge. Please keep all those students and us in your prayers.

It’s hard to believe that April is about to start. I am planning a lot that month and I hope to settle things with the doctors. Keep that in your prayers also.
